Seamstress: Joining The Cut Pieces
“Seamstress: Joining The Cut Pieces” recalls a journey which is present in almost all of my art practice and is related to work done by hand, sewing and industrialization. There is a quiet mediation in the work of weaving and embroidery, a calmness covertly present in between the delicacy of the woven looms
and imprints. The image of the phoenix appears on hand woven blankets that are appropriated, cut
out, embellished with embroidery, and pasted onto a golden canvas. The industrial gold leaf, a popular material for traditional lacquer and oil paintings, grows out from the background and seemingly begins to consume the fabric and at the same time, the fabric and silk floral prints begins to take over the gold leaf. Industrialization, machines, culture, labor, and tradition coexist in “Seamstress: Joining The Cut Pieces” and form an introspective conversation about the current state of Vietnam.
